It sounds like the battery (or possibly the camera) has become malformed, which is not a good thing. 600 shots for the d5300 vs 550 shots for the d3100. It could be both, the battery and the charger fault.

If you ever get a new battery, make sure you charge it fully first and let it drain fully after every charge (until camera says, battery low shutter won't function) the battery has a life. 600 shots for the d5300 vs 550 shots for the d3100. I don't believe it's a flaw, but a design feature. I've always found it a bit annoying, personally, but it will come out with a little effort. The battery on my d300 (or d700) never just slides out when i open the compartment.
